School Visits:
I offer two presentations for grades 3 and up.
Magical Monsters in The Pearl Hunter: Kai meets many supernatural creatures, including a ghost whale, the Dragon King, and shapeshifting foxes. These monsters from Japanese folklore are known as yokai, and they’ve inspired many characters in pop culture such as Pokemon. Students will learn about the history and myths behind yokai, the different types of monsters, and the significance of the creatures that Kai encounters on her journey.
Capturing Life through Lists: In Through a Clouded Mirror, Yuki is looking to escape life in her new town and her new middle school. After passing through a magic mirror that takes her to the Japanese imperial court at the turn of the 11th century, she meets Sei Shonagon, a real-life attendant to the empress and the author of The Pillow Book. Shonagon is still studied today and is famous for her lists. Students will learn how Shonagon captures time and place through her lists in a way that is still relatable today. As a group, we will develop a list about our own time and place.
